Wish Upon NJ/ NY Chapter launch party at The Florentine Gardens

I want to welcome Wish Upon Foundation to New Jersey. Wish Upon is the first non for profit organization that provides weddings to couples facing terminal illness, regardless of sexual orientation. We are very proud to be part of their service donors and to help them in such a wonderful and noble cause.

Last night, Wish Upon held a launch party at  The Florentine Gardens to officially launch the New York / New Jersey chapters. I was overwhelmed to see so many wonderful wedding professionals who were present to show their support, and by all the admirable professionals who donated their services to make this a memorable night. It’s incredibly rewarding to belong to an industry that is so devoted to giving back. I was equally excited to actually meet so many of my Wedding Wire friends from Northern New Jersey.

The event couldn’t have happened without the support of The Florentine Gardens, who provided their beautiful ballroom, delicious food, unbelievable drinks, and their supper friendly staff. The The Florentine Gardens is located in River Vale, Bergen County New Jersey.

If you are interested in helping out, you may visit their site to make a donation to Wish Upon.

Crystal Ballroom Radisson Hotel NJ Wedding – Lauren and Luis Wedding Pictures

It was the second snow storm of the year; Danny was driving, and we could barely see the road. Good thing we left the house three hours prior to our starting time to give room to snow related delays. Just a few weeks before, we had had 22 inches of snow, and this one was not looking good. During the whole trip, I kept thinking how are we going to pull this wedding off, but luckily the skies cleared and the snowed stopped. By the time we arrived at Lauren’s house to take pictures and video of her getting ready, you could barely remember how the day had started. From then on, Lauren and Luis’ wedding day was a real blessing. A Truly lovely ceremony at St. Aloysius followed by a non stop music at the Crystal Ballroom Radisson Hotel in Freehold New Jersey made their wedding, a day to remember.

Lauren and Luis were married at St. Aloysius, an absolutely gorgeous church. And even though some of the church rules for photographers and videographers made our job more difficult, it is a truly remarkable place to get married. The church was still filled with Christmas decor that made the ceremony even more charming. All this accompanied by divine music from a Quartet.

I’m officially giving Lauren the award for the tidiest bridal room, ever. She had thought of every detail, and I love her for that. She wore a gorgeous wedding dress. Even the Coco Channel perfume and pearls were placed to add a touch of romance in her room.

Featured – Vow-Wow-Wow Wedding Blog Magazine

During the summer, I had the great joy of shooting Marcela and Eric’s wedding at the Summit Arboretum NJ. They had a charming and intimate wedding surrounded only by those closest to them, and among the lucky guests was their puddle dog Mona, who walked down the Aisle as part of the bridal party. This morning, I received wonderful news that their wedding had been featured on Vow-Wow-Wow Wedding Blog. For those of you who are not familiar with this incredible site, Vow Wow Wow is a delightful wedding blog with lots information and resources to help brides and grooms include their dogs as part of their Wedding ceremony and celebration.

I have seen very few people as committed as Marcela is to helping and protecting animals. She sincerely cares about them, and she is part of a group that helps place dogs with new mommies and daddies. I am sure, she will be thrilled to see her wedding featured in a blog that is committed to a cause so close to hers.

I want to extend many thanks to Celia Milton, one of New Jersey most prominent Wedding Officiants and also founder of Vow-Wow-Wow for reaching out to us.

Photography FAQ – What is a First Look?

So what is a first look? Since that notion has become more popular, many brides ask that question because they are not really sure what it means. A first look is a moment staged and set up by a wedding photographer for the bride and groom to see each other before the ceremony. Normally, bride and groom would agree with your wedding photographer on site away from family and friends to give them privacy and to make that moment just for them. Ok, not really away, but a few feet away. The groom would be looking away -at the wedding photographer – while the bride starts walking down towards him. She will tap his shoulder, and he will turn around and see his beautiful bride for the first time.

After they have had a moment to themselves, we head to take some bride and groom portraits, then of course we take pictures with the family and the bridal party. We tuck away the bride before guests arrive. That pretty much sets you free to relax and enjoy your wedding.

Certainly, I don’t impose myself on any of my brides and grooms, but whenever I am asked for my professional opinion, I recommend the First Look. Here is why. A lot will happen on your wedding day; a couple in love will get married, greet guests, mingle, have a first dance, dance with parents, eat, toast, have a bouquet and garter celebration, cut the cake, have their bridal portraits, and portraits with bridal party and family. If the ceremony and reception will happen at the same place, all that will happen in five and half hours.

By having a first look, you are basically adding two more  hours to your wedding day, which means that you will get two hours of photography instead of the forty to forty five minutes you end up having if you are having your pictures taken during the cocktail hour. This translates to having more time for those magazine bridal portraits you like, and for more candid and fun pictures with your bridal party and family. Since you already had your pictures taken, you can actually enjoy your cocktail hour, which means that both of you can eat, and be happy. If you are not having a private cocktail hour, you can mingle with your guests, and greet them during this time. This is such a great time for candid and photojournalistic pictures.

Yes, you will be giving something up. The first time he sees you at the altar wearing your wedding gown, but he will still be just as happy to see you walking down the aisle.

Il Villaggio Wedding – Olivia + Carlos Wedding Pictures

A few months ago, I got an email requesting information about our wedding photography and videos, and the name struck me. At first, I wondered, is this a prank? But I immediately came back to my senses. Before, I could answered on pricing, style or anything, I had to comment. OMG, that is the name my daughter would have had – first and last name. Then, she said OMG your last name is just like my fiancee’s, and your husband is Cuban just like my parents. Could there be any more coincidences? Yes, Danny and her family come from the same town in Cuba. And just like that, we clicked.

I have been looking forward to photographing this wedding for a long time. Olivia is one of the sweetest brides I have ever had the pleasure to work with. She is beautiful inside and out, and I feel honored and blessed to have met her, her fiance and their beautiful family. The love you feel for one another pours out in every look and smile, and we wish you a lifetime of happiness. Thank you so much to the super talented Lauren iAvarone of Make Up Artistry for making her look so beautiful and radiant on her wedding day.

Olivia and Carlos married on New Year’s at Il Villaggio. Yes, they are a 1/1/11 couple, and their wedding marked our first wedding of the year. If they are a sign of the couples we will have this year, we will be truly blessed.

Photography – 2010 Year in Review – favorite wedding detail pictures

As the year 2010 comes to an end, I went through the weddings I photographed throughout this year. And I was happy to revisit each wedding and relive the beautiful memories. So I thought I could share some of my 2010 wedding pictures. This post is dedicated to wedding details, and by that I mean: wedding and engagement rings, wedding flowers, bouquets, boutonnieres, wedding cakes, invitations, centerpieces and reception decor.

I love how each picture tells us in what season the weddings took place, spring, summer, or fall. Or whether it was a casual or ballroom wedding.

Engagement rings… how everything starts..

How to trust wedding reviews and know who is legit?

The other day, a group of wedding professionals and myself were discussing some concerns brides are expressing: How to trust wedding reviews? Which ones are legitimate? And the bottom line: Who to trust among so many wedding professionals out there? This got me thinking…. and thinking… and thinking so more.

Reviews are a catch 22.
Reviews are a catch 22 for any wedding professional. They make us look good and bad, but we need them.

No reviews: not good – signals lack of experience – “they’re probably just starting”
Bad review: no trust – signals bad reputation – “run Forrest, run.”
Somewhat good reviews: some trust, some doubt – not enough trust- “Uhm, not sure. Next!”
Too many good reviews: too good to be true – fishy – “Really how can everyone just love them. They must be posting those reviews to look good.”

So what’s next for wedding professionals and brides. As a professional, how can I prove that my reviews are legit? And for brides, how can you trust they are legit?

wedding reviews

Too many options…
First of all, I must admit that it must be daunting for any bride to choose a wedding vendor out of hundreds that are out there. On the other hand, because there are so many options, it means there is a vendor with a style, personality, experience and price range that is right for every bride.

But how can you find them?
How do you discern the real professional from scams. The experienced from the inexperienced. “The one who is charging way too much, if I can get the same thing cheaper.”

Engage with them!
This is what I do whenever I’m looking for a service. Point out the ones whose work you like, and engage with them. Follow them on Fb, or twitter, and follow their blog via their RSS. That way you know what are they up to; how are they like; if their personalities are a good match with yours and that of your fiance; how many weddings they do a year, which will tell you how much experience they have.

This will give you The bigger picture of who they are. And let them know you are out there. Once you know them, and have seen their work and their weddings, the reviews will make more sense. You may start pointing out reviews to real people, “Oh, this is the girl from the garden wedding; oh yeah, I know who she is.”

how to know which wedding reviews are legitimate

PS. Ok, the pictures with tags are cheesy, but you get the point.

Photography Q&A – Getting your Wedding Published

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending a conference given by Rebecca Crumley, Wedding Photo Editor of The Knot magazine. I’ve been following her on twitter for some time, and she is absolutely a joy. Rebecca cares so much about her job, and she was extremely gracious when I asked her for an interview for our blog about how to get your wedding published.

How to get your Wedding Published

wedding cake hot pink roses

What advice can you give brides who want to have their weddings published?
Really take the time to come up with creative ideas that are both unique to you and original. Take inspiration from everything we share on theknot.com, but if you directly copy the ideas, it’s already done. But more importantly, it’s your wedding and remember that—it’s not a media event!

What are the things you are looking for in a wedding submission?
Details, details, details. It’s very important that you work with your photographer on your time schedule to leave time for décor photos. It takes time to pull it off properly, so if your goal is to have your wedding published, this needs to be allotted for in your day’s schedule.

What are the top must have wedding details?
Cake, bouquets, stationery (yes! Bring your invitation to the wedding day so your photographer can shoot it), an overall of both the reception and ceremony before the guests arrive, candid bridal party shots, table décor, boutonnieres, favors, exits, and more details….

What is the worst mistake a bride can make in terms of wedding decor?
Broad answer: not consistently matching your colors. So make sure your stationery matches the overall palette

Fine tune answer: wrinkled linens

Where can a bride get inspiration for her wedding?
Follow TheKnot.com “Wedding Obsessions” blog – www.theknot.com/weddingblog – where we report on the little details that impress us. And, of course, browse through the thousands of inspirational photos we have on www.theknot.com/photos.

What nice wedding trends are you seeing for 2011?
Right now we’re seeing a buttoned-up version of the shabby-chic wedding: slightly more formal while still casual. But we’re projecting with the buzz of Chelsea Clinton’s wedding and the hyped royal wedding of Prince Charles that brides will be gearing up to go all formal again soon!
