Documentary Photography – Shad Festival Lambertvile New Jersey

With a car full of gas, and no plans in sight, I posted a question on my Fabebook page. Where should we go? A friend John recommended we visit Lambertville, and to be completely honest, I had no idea of what would make this place so special to make a 90 minute drive. Another friend ditto the idea, and added that the Shad Festival was taking place. Again, I had no idea of what the Festival was all about, but I was curious to find out, so we made the trip. Upon arriving, I felt like I stepped into another world; a beautiful little town with beautiful colonial houses and streets filled with cherry blossoms. People were cordial, and the town seemed made for walking. So far I was sold.

I have to admit, I love street fairs and festivals. I love the idea of people of all ages and backgrounds gathering in one place like a community and ready for having a good time. I like the street vendors, the artisans, and the yes, the food. Even the dogs were happy here, and even them had treats made specially for them. Kids were also having a great time. There was face painting booth, balloons, music and even a small pool for fishing. So if you haven’t been here, you should totally come visit Lambertville. It’s really worth the trip.

Photography, flowers and the NYC Floral Expo

Last week, I attended the NYC Floral Expo at the Javitz Center. Exporters from around the world travel to NYC to introduce their flowers to the NYC market. Thank you to my friend John Arguetta for inviting me to shoot with him. I met wonderful people, and I got to see many beautiful flowers that are coming up to the NYC flower market. I can wait to see all the beautiful trends at the upcoming weddings.

In many countries, June 1st is International Children’s Day, and it brings back joyful memories of laughter, sweets and toys. I want to give that back to my daughter because there is nothing better than children’s laughter and happiness.

Movie Weekend recommendations – Antonio Banderas, Bradley Cooper and Paul Rudd

It’s no secret, I’m in LOVE with films. The lights go down, and for ninety minutes you are transported into another world. You cry, you laugh or scream of horror, but for that period of time, the world disappears, and you are submerged into the imagination of the filmmakers. The ultimate treat is coming out of the movies with the feeling that you just watched a great story. I can’t say when I started loving them, but I remember being a little girl and watching black and white horror movies every day even when I couldn’t sleep at night. Or begging my mom to let me rent a movie – EVERY DAY- as long as I got all As. Yes, I’m a film buff, and a very proud one. Luckily Danny is a film buff too, and together we remember film quotes or references that nobody can understand. We are known for watching films nobody else knows or watches, from all genres and countries. Our friends know us for that. In light of that, I would like to continue with my movie recommendation posts.

movie recommendations

This week I’m recommending three great actors in three very different genres: Antonio Banderas, Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper.

Foreign: “The Skin I live in” – by Almodovar. If you are an Almodovar far, you have to watch this film. If you are not an Almodovar fan, you better pass. This film is for serious film lovers as it is like non other.

Comedy: “My idiot brother” – This movie is seriously silly, and totally awesome. Great acting, amazing cast and totally unpretentious, it definitely became one of my favorite Paul Rudd’s movies.

Thriller: “Limitless” – With Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro you can’t really go wrong. Very good acting by Bradley Cooper, and a great story that will make you want to be Limitless.

To childhood friendships and second generations – Photo of the week

Once upon a time, there were two four year old girls who met in Kindergarden. During the next thirteen years, these two girls became inseparable as they went through elementary, junior high and high school together. We were like peas and carrots; peanut butter and jelly. We were both only child, and we understood each other even when we didn’t say a word, although most of the time, we couldn’t stop talking. Our conversations were about nothing and everything. There were always interesting and never boring. Both our moms pushed us to reach for the stars, and we believed there was nothing we couldn’t do if we put our minds, hearts and souls and worked hard towards it.

A few weeks ago, I saw my dear friend Alicia after sooooo many years, emphasis in many years, and I can’t say how happy that made me. An added special bonus was to see her daughter Arianita and my Isabella together. It reminded me of us, of that special time in our lives.

This photo of Arianita represents all of that. It captures that innocence of our childhood friendship; our freedom; our happiness, that desire to reach for the stars and our Joie de Vivre.

Documentary Portraiture Photographer - Restore NYC - Support Freedom

Helping others through photography – Restore Freedom

Earlier this year, I was burnt out, emotionally, physically and creatively. I questioned myself creatively while I juggled the balance between my professional and my personal life. Wedding Photography is rewarding but very time consuming, and when I’m not shooting a wedding, my time is consumed by photo processing, editing, customer service, and marketing. But where did my creativity go? I was a photographer turned business owner, and I felt a longing in my heart.

As an artist, I felt I was hitting rock bottom, and artistically, I lost a sense of purpose.

Luckily, through on online forum, I became involved on a video project for Restore NYC. Restore is a nonprofit dedicated to restoring freedom and empowering survivors of sex trafficking by providing them a place they can call home and where they can start a healing process. I was the still photographer of this project, and I got to meet some wonderful people who are committed in helping these amazing women. Working on this project and doing documentary portraiture was very gratifying, and seeing the finished video, I felt a sense of pride because I know my photos are part of an effort to help these women by supporting their freedom. Slavery in any way, shape or form is simply not right, and we can help stop it by supporting organizations such at this. If you want to become involved or donate, you can do so here.

Press play to see the finished video.

Good-bye Michael

I met him once, but a dear friend of mine cared enough about Michael for me to be touched by this. Michael passed away and my friend is heartbroken. As her heart heals and she picks up the pieces, she regrets not having a recent photo of him. That taught me a valuable lesson, photograph everything and everybody, you never know when it would be the last chance.

To Michael…

Taking a break – Vacations 2012 : Cancun, Mexico

It’s been seven years since we took our last real vacation. For a while now, we knew we needed to take a break, but wishing and actually doing something about it are two different things. But Danny totally owned this and booked our trip, and just like that we were on our way to heaven. That’s Cancun for those who don’t know where heaven is.

We were there before, and we just had to go back; this time with our Isabella. The only catch: no computer, no cellphone, no iPad, and definitely no camera. Say, what? I almost died when Danny said no camera. Since Isabella was not part of the “no camera deal,” mommy remembered to pack her little $80 point & shoot canon camera, and that my dears is the camera my husband allowed me to use to record our vacations.

But you know what, these were the best days of our lives, and we enjoyed every single minute, point and shoot camera and all!!

Two of these photos were taken by Isabella… I would love to see if you can guess which ones.
